Flavacol

Origin

Flavacol is the classic movie theater popcorn seasoning made by Act II (ConAgra Brands). It is the standard seasoning used in commercial popcorn machines at movie theaters across the United States.

Flavor Profile

Ultra-fine salt with artificial butter flavoring and yellow coloring (Yellow 5 / Yellow 6). The salt is ground much finer than table salt, allowing it to adhere evenly to popcorn coated in oil. Distinct buttery, salty, movie-theater flavor.

Use in Popcorn

Toss directly into kernels before popping in oil — approximately 1/2 to 1 teaspoon per batch of 1/3 cup kernels. The fine grind means it coats evenly as the kernels pop. Can also be dusted lightly on freshly popped popcorn, but adding it to the oil during popping gives the most authentic results. Start with a light hand; a little goes a long way.

Notes

Extremely fine powder — can create dust clouds when shaking. Sift or pre-mix with a pinch of sugar if applying after popping to avoid clumping. The butter flavoring is artificial but iconic for movie theater-style popcorn. Store in a dry container; the fine powder clumps easily in humidity.
